Cornwall is a popular holiday destination for families, and for good reason. One of its main attractions is its extensive coastline, which makes for great days out on the beach and plenty of family walks. With more than 420 miles of coastline, it can be difficult to narrow down your options.

If you’re planning a trip to Cornwall, finding the right accommodation is key. A family campsite in Cornwall, Globe Vale Holiday Park provides convenient access to many a picturesque walk and it’s packed with family-friendly amenities. With both camping pitches and luxury caravans, it’s a great base for exploring the wider Cornish countryside.

Best walks in Cornwall

These walks are suitable for all members of the family because they’re relatively easy going. If you have toddlers or small kids, though, make sure you bring a buggy!

Perranporth to St Agnes

This route is 4.7 miles long and is one-way (you need to take a bus back to the start). It’s pretty much all the same elevation, although there’s one steep climb along the Blue Hills section. Make sure you visit Trevallas Cove to see a functioning tin mine.

Padstow to Stepper Point

At 5.8 miles long, this route is a bit of a trek. However, it’s on relatively flat ground and is circular, so you can just take it easy and do it at your own pace. Along the way you’ll see the River Camel and the Doom Bar, which is famous for its mermaids. The walk is best enjoyed in Spring with a picnic if the weather is good.

Lizard Peninsula Circular Walk

The Lizard Peninsula is a National Trust heritage site. Great for family walks; you can choose from routes ranging from 4 to 11 miles depending on how much energy you have. There are loads of beautiful landscapes to take in, and the route is dog-friendly.

Park Head and Pentire Steps

At 1.9 miles, this is by far the shortest walk on our list. Circular and fairly level, the main path runs along the clifftop. The beach is famous as the filming site for Poldark, so if you’re a fan of the show it’s worth checking out. Other sites include the Bedruthan Steps, the Trescore Islands and Charlestown Harbour.

Benefits of Hiking

Walking in general is great for both our physical and mental health. It can help improve your circulation and breathing, as well as lower your blood pressure. Also, being out in nature is a great way to calm your mind, and all the fresh sea air will tire your kids out pretty quickly.

As long as you prepare yourself, there’s no reason you can’t go for a bracing walk around the Cornish coast regardless of the time of year.

Preparing for Family Walks

If you plan to go on even a relatively short walk, it’s important to be prepared. Consider the following when planning your hike:

Proper shoes

You don’t necessarily need hiking boots, but make sure you wear something that’s comfy, with sturdy soles that have good grip. The benefit of boots is that they support your ankles, which reduces your risk of injury.

Safety

Generally, none of these walks are dangerous. That said, be mindful of walking your children near cliffs and open water. A lot of popular family walks will be fenced in, but you should always keep your children near to ensure their safety.

What to take

Along with good shoes and lots of water, make sure you’ve got coats if needed, some snacks at the very least, and hats and sunglasses. One of the best things about these coastal walks in Cornwall is that there are loads of places to stop for picnics – as long as you’re happy to carry all the food!
